Shopping for a new refrigerator? Whether you’re upgrading your kitchen or outfitting a compact apartment, choosing the right fridge isn’t just about style; it’s about fit, function, and flow.
With the kitchen being the heart of the home, it’s essential to know exactly what you’re getting into in terms of your storage needs and to secure the right fit and style for your home.
Not sure what to do first? No worries, Summit has the essentials covered. Plus, an easy-to-follow guide to measuring your space, so you walk away with the information you need for the perfect fit.
Understand What Is The Average Fridge Size
While refrigerator dimensions vary by manufacturer, most models fall into three general size categories:
Small Refrigerators: Typically 24 inches wide, less than 70 inches high, and 29–33 inches deep, small refrigerators feature a slim, vertical design ideal for apartments, ADUs, offices, and kitchenettes. These models are the most likely to be available in counter-depth options.
At Summit, however, “small” doesn’t mean limited. Our specialty sizing is designed specifically for apartments, tiny homes, and other space-conscious environments.
Medium refrigerators: Medium models generally measure 33 inches wide, 65–75 inches high, and 30–36 inches deep. This category offers a wider range of configurations and storage layouts suited for mid-sized kitchens. Some models are available in counter-depth designs.
Large refrigerators: Large refrigerators typically measure 36 inches wide, 60–70 inches high, and 30–36 inches deep. These are most common in full-size residential kitchens and are less frequently available in counter-depth formats.
Common Refrigerator Configurations
Depending on your layout and storage preferences, you’ll typically find these styles:
- Top-Mount Refrigerator-Freezers
- Bottom-Mount Refrigerator-Freezers
- Side-by-Side Refrigerator-Freezers
- French Door Refrigerator-Freezers
Each configuration offers various advantages when it comes to accessibility, organization, and footprint. So the best choice depends on your kitchen layout and daily cooling habits.
How to Measure for Your Refrigerator in 3 Steps
Proper measuring is critical to curating your ideal kitchen space. Even being off by half an inch can cause installation headaches.
1.Measure Your Kitchen
- Measure the width at the upper cabinet, countertop, and base levels
- Measure the height from the floor to the lowest point of the upper cabinet (both front and back).
- Measure the depth from the back wall to the front edge of the counter.
Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.
2. Measure the Ventilation Space
Most refrigerators require a minimum clearance of:
- 2 inches from the back wall
- 1 inch above
- 1/8 inch on either side
Always confirm the manufacturer’s recommended clearance for your specific model, which can usually be found in the care manual. Remember: Air circulation is essential for performance and longevity.
3.Measure the Refrigerator Door
Always consider:
- Door swing radius
- Bottom-freezer drawer extension
- Nearby cabinets or walls
- Kitchen islands or obstructions
Ask yourself: Will the doors fully open without hitting anything?
Installer Note: To set yourself up for success, measure the delivery path. Before purchasing, ensure the refrigerator can actually reach your kitchen.
- Measure all doorways along the route
- Measure hallway widths
- Check for tight turns or stairwells
- Remove furniture or obstacles in advance
A perfect fit in the kitchen won’t matter if it can’t get through the front door.
